Today, as I navigated the labyrinth of YouTube, I was suddenly washed over by a wave of nostalgia. Isn’t it incredible how a simple melody, a familiar rhythm, can effortlessly transport us back in time? This is precisely what happened when I stumbled upon the song ‘Na Granicy Dnia’ by the renowned Polish band Skaldowie led by two brothers Jacek and Andrzej Zielinski. It was an instantaneous journey back to the year 1973, a reminder of a time when I was passionately involved in music journalism in Wrocław.
As a young, vibrant journalist, the thrill of my job was being in the epicenter of the musical universe. I was able to rub shoulders with the most famous artists of that time – many of whom became my friends. It was an era of music innovation and excitement, and Skaldowie was at the forefront of it. I cherished their music since my teen years, and like a normal teenager even had a sort of crush on the younger of two brothers, Jacek. Their music was deeply rooted in Polish folklore but was very modern, full of energy, rhythm, and creativity. I never met them personally but had a close encounter and a long conversation over the phone with the older brother Andrzej.
The song “Na Granicy Dnia” was presented by them on the music festival in Opole in 1973 – it had an unusual arrangement and resonated with a unique musicality that I felt was ahead of its time. The moment I heard it I was utterly captivated. Skaldowie were already soaring on the wings of fame, and I was certain that this brilliant composition would fetch them another well-deserved award.
Yet, much to my dismay, it did not. Despite the song’s undeniable charm, it did not receive the recognition I was certain it deserved. But, being a stubborn enthusiast of their music and an ardent believer in their talent, I wasn’t ready to let the song slip into oblivion without a fight.
I rallied some like-minded individuals, and together, we initiated a special honor: the ‘Golden Rooster’ award. Our aim was to celebrate the creative genius of Skaldowie and, more specifically, to recognize their contribution to music with ‘Na Granicy Dnia.’ The award, a symbol of our collective admiration and support, was sent by mail.
This initiative led to an extensive phone interview with one of the brothers Andrzej Zieliński. His insights, reflections, and stories from behind the scenes made for a fascinating conversation. The interview was later published in the then-popular weekly magazine, ‘Wiadomości,’ adding another layer of recognition to the unique composition.
To this day, ‘Na Granicy Dnia’ remains a vastly underappreciated song that should have been a massive hit. Yet, thanks to the virtual world of YouTube, it continues to serenade us with its timeless melody. Every time I listen to it, I am instantly transported back to my youth – a time of music, friends, and unyielding passion for the arts. It serves as a sweet reminder of a wild and exciting time, a personal memoir that will always hold a special place in my heart.
